The tool uses deliberately modest next-cup heuristics: bitterness shortens the midpoint steep by 25%; weakness raises midpoint leaf by 20% without exceeding the profile maximum; flat aroma adds up to 4°C within range; and overpowering roast shortens time by 20%. These are controlled starting changes, not universal extraction laws.

Worked example: a bitter Sencha

  1. The selected Sencha profile has a 60–120 second Western range, whose midpoint is 90 seconds.
  2. For a bitter cup, the tool first reduces 90 seconds by 25%: 90 × 0.75 = 67.5, rounded to 68 seconds.
  3. Leaf and temperature stay near their profile midpoint so the next tasting isolates the shorter contact time.
  4. If the cup remains harsh, the next controlled trial can use the cooler end of the range or examine water chemistry and leaf condition.
